Malcolm
Smith is a Senior Lecturer and currently Chair
of the History Department at the University
of Wales at Lampeter.
A
graduate of the University of Lancaster, Malcolm's
first research was into British rearmament policy
in the 1930s. Nowadays, his specialist research
fields are British and European history since
the Second World War and the history of popular
culture, with a particular interest in popular
film. He has published widely in these areas.
Malcolm is currently researching in two broad
areas - the role of air power in NATO and the
history of Hollywood.
In his teaching, he is particularly
interested in interdisciplinary approaches and
in the application of postmodern ideas to the
study of history, in particular the way in which
historical interpretations vary in different
cultural contexts. The modules on which he teaches
include:
- The Past in Practice
- The Long Second World War,
Europe 1929 - 1989
- The Home Front, Britain
1939 - 1945
- Hollywood
- Victorian Popular Culture
- Cinema, Culture and Society
in Britain since 1968
